Our Honeymoon

We haven’t taken our honeymoon yet.

After our wedding in Yosemite, we did take a long roadtrip. In fact, we hit 36 National Park units and drove 8700 miles through 17 states – one of the longest trips we’ve taken to date.

However, we really view this as a roadtrip that happened to occur immediately after our wedding, and not a honeymoon. Partly, this is because we really wanted our honeymoon to visit somewhere outside the continental United States. For years, we’ve talked about hitting Alaska, Hawaii, or Ireland and Scotland for our honeymoon. And a bunch of Civil War battlefields in the South just doesn’t cut it.

So why didn’t we go to Alaska after the wedding?

Well, for starters, we didn’t have enough time to plan a great trip. But the main reason is that we didn’t have the money to do the trip that we wanted. By skipping the traditional wedding gifts – we already have all the home stuff we need – and having friends and family contribute to a honeymoon fund, we were able to raise enough money to do the Alaska trip. And save ourselves the hassle of decluttering the house of a bunch of duplicate kitchen wares.

Alaska this summer

We’re finally starting to plan the honeymoon for this summer. We’re also beginning to realize that we just aren’t going to have the time to accomplish what we wanted to up there (it’s a big place), so we’ll probably just spend more time at fewer places. I have a feeling that we’ll enjoy it enough to plan a few more trips up there to hit those other places.

We’ll keep this page updated with our plans as they get made.

EDIT:  We’re no longer planning a honeymoon trip this summer. Kim is spending her vacation time up in Oregon to be with her sister who just gave birth and needs surgery and with her mother who has had some health troubles of her own. Scott hasn’t made any of his own plans yet and it’s unclear if they’ll end up on even a shorter trip together this summer.
