Our 2008 Family Update letter, blog-style

by Scott on December 23, 2008

We hope that you’re having a good holiday season and concluding a great year for you and your family. We’ve been a bit busy and haven’t done a good job keeping in touch with everyone, but hopefully this site will fill you in on what you might have missed, and we promise to do a better job of keeping it updated. Please, take a look around. Seriously…this took a lot of work to put together.

And now, a quick rundown of the last year’s major events:

December 2007

Kim surprised her mom for her 60th birthday.  With the help of family and her friend Shanna, Kim was able to get up to Oregon and Washington State to help her mom celebrate such a momentous occasion.

Later that month, we took a road trip to San Diego to watch ASU play in the Holiday Bowl against Texas.  While the game was umm…not good if you are a Sun Devil fan, the rest of the trip was fun.  We went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park and spent time with Scott’s cousin Larry and his girlfriend Ann Marie.

May 2008

Scott was hired on with the National Conservation System Foundation as the organization’s Southwest Field Coordinator.  While he enjoyed working at the Sierra Club, this new opportunity was too great to pass up. Working from home, he gets to continue his work building the capacity of local “friends” groups for the National Landscape Conservation System, our country’s newest system of protected public lands.

July 2008

We got married!!!!!  Finally!!!!!  We had an intimate ceremony in Yosemite National Park.  The day was fabulous and all we could have asked for.  Having a small attendance helped make it the special moment we wanted it to be.  Being surrounded by nature as we pledged our lives to each other was amazing.

After the wedding, we took a post-wedding road trip – though this shouldn’t be confused with our postponed honeymoon.  We headed east and visited a good chunk of the national parks in the South, which means we saw quite a few battlefields along with some wonderful natural areas. This was one of our longest roadtrips ever – we hit 17 states, visited nearly 40 park units, and drove more than 8700 miles.

August 2008

We had our wedding reception right after we arrived back in Phoenix from our trip.  There was a lot of last minute decisions and prep but in the end it turned out uniquely ours.  We had the ASU mascot Sparky show up as a surprise guest.  It was hectic running the show ourselves but it made our day to see everyone there to celebrate our marriage.

September 2008

We took a nice four-day trip to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks in Utah.  More importantly, we had a new addition to the family. And yes, I am talking about a new 46” LCD HDTV – and just in time for football season.

October 2008

Kim officially changed her name to Kimberly Joan Parlee Jones.  The plan was to have a hyphenated last name but once she was at the Social Security Administration office, Kim learned that if she hyphenated her name now, it would cost approximately $400 to remove the hyphen at a later date.  It was very important to Kim to maintain her maiden name in her new married name so she decided to have two middle names.

November 2008

Scott turned the big 3-0 this month!  Due to prior work engagements, Scott was in Tucson over this historic day.  So Kim put together a surprise for his birthday, having good friends and Scott’s dad travel to Tucson for a celebration.   Kim was able to completely surprise  Scott, which in itself makes the day a success!
